It is the eve of 2014 and instead of wishing you a simple, shallow Happy New Year, I thought I would look into my crystal ball and give you a few thoughts to chew on for the upcoming new year and beyond.
Some positive, some not so positive…
First, I don’t know about you, but i’ve been feeling the storm clouds gathering. Not only in regards to what we do as adult businesses and entrepreneurs, but for all small businesses as a whole. I’ll avoid going off into the tinfoil hat land of conspiracies for the moment, but for now let’s just say that there is some serious, heavy shit going down globally, economically and environmentally that is sure to surface and effect us all in the near future.
Most importantly for you, the adult industry as a whole has changed, is still changing & evolving and will continue to be attacked from all directions. (nothing new there). Making money is becoming much more difficult and expensive. The old business models and ways of doing business are no longer viable and in order to stay in business, much less have a successful one, it takes business and marketing savvy as well as a concerted effort to stay ahead of the learning curve of new technology.
New Year’s Revolution:
Please do me a favor and make part of your New Year’s resolution a decision to get your shit together and take action on it. Plain and simple. Learn as much as you can and continue to do so. Don’t be lazy and think that the easy tribute money will always roll in. You have to stay sharp and keep your skills sharp. Nobody is going to do it for you.
Remember, you have the same Google on your phone as any other rocket scientist. Use it. Learn, research, implement, test, adjust, rinse wash and repeat.
Like Britney says: “You wanna Lamborghini? You gotta work bitch.” Put in the effort and reap the benefits.
A few topics to pay attention to that might effect our business in the next couple years:
UK Porn filters:
The UK government has put in place new laws for 2014 and beyond that require all UK ISP’s to implement mandatory porn filters. These filters will block porn, sexually related content and other sensitive subject matter. In order to have them removed, you have to intentionally instruct your ISP to remove the filters. So far, it seems to be a bit of a cluster fuck, because the same filters that are intended to block porn are actually blocking the websites of the idiots who imposed the laws, but regardless, they are in place and working, (maybe too well).
If these filters work well, and I am sure they will find excuses that they do, you can bet your ass they will be implemented elsewhere. Mind you, they don’t just filter porn, but any kind of subversive subject matter that might be anti government,´or “anti any other type” of political agenda.
If you do business in or with the UK, this could be a huge pain in the ass for you. New customers will be harder to find, so optimizing the existing customers will be imperative. In order to circumvent these filters, you MUST have a proper marketing funnel in place so you don’t lose contact with your existing customers.
75% Taxation on Millionaires:
In order to try to solve their debt issues, France recently passed a law stating that if you make an annual income of $1 million or more, you will be required to pay a 75% “rich person” penalty tax for 2013 and 2014. French actor, Gerard Depardieu, recently gave up his French nationality and defected to Russia, just for this reason. I have also read rumors that the central banks are planning to do the same globally in the near future.
Although most of you aren’t millionaires, this could dramatically effect the spending habits of your affluent customer base. Your ability to stay in close communication and deliver irresistible offers to your customers will be more important than ever. Plan now before it is too late.
Bitcoin and other virtual currencies:
Because of these massive taxation efforts, people will be converting their investments into anything that isn’t existing currency or easily taxable. You might want to start putting more focus on accepting other types of things as exchange for your services. Bitcoin, for now, is still going strong and I expect it to stick around, despite a few minor ups and downs. Virtual and digital currencies will continue to be a hot topic in the near future. Maybe consider doing trade in exchange for some collectable art? You laugh now, but i’m serious. Diversify your payment options.
The Rise of the Siren Servers:
There is an awesome book by a dude named Jaron Lanier called “Who Owns the Future?
.” It is basically about how, in the near future, there will be a massive convergence of all the digital systems and services we use, so that soon there will only be a few massive mega systems. This basically means that it will become much more difficult to stay independent without relying on being part of the Google, Facebook, Apple, “Whatever” ecosystem and their restrictions on what you say and how you do business within their systems.
As a result, it is more important than ever for you to establish your own platforms and means of controlling your communication with your clients. You should have been doing this already and I would almost argue that it might be too late at this point, but there is still time for you to do this and reap the benefits.

Independents Are Doing It For Themselves:
On a positive note, the latest trend in adult is entirely in your favor as an independent adult entertainer. The real money is no longer in the large porn production companies and is being taken over by the independent entertainers (Doms, cam performers, PSO’s etc) who can create unique, hi priced experiences for people who want something different, personalized and will pay top dollar (or Bitcoin) for it.
Personalization is the new Porn 2.0 and YOU all are in the best position to deliver it. Focus on that, use it to your financial advantage in 2014 and you will lead the industry.
